Coire nan Arr

Several scenes of "Wee Jock's Lament" were filmed around Coire nan Arr in the Applecross Hills near the Bealach na Ba (Pass of the cattle) one of the highest roads in the UK (ascends to over 620 metres).

spacerPlockton to Stromeferry. Then A890 to Strathcarron passing Attadale House (the house used as the major's house in the series). The A896 to Tornapress, then take the the minor road on the left to Applecross.
spacerThis single track road leads up to the Bealach na Ba and has warnings that it is not to be used by inexperienced drivers or large vehicles as it has numerous hairpin bends, 1 in 5 inclines and very big drops (thankfully with crash barriers) at the side of the road.
spacerLuckily the location used in the episode is at the easy start of the road before it gets 'difficult'. Drive along the road for two or three miles until it passes into the seaward end of the Coire nan Arr. You will come to a bridge over a river (the Russel Burn) which is where Harry and Francie take to the hills on their 'holiday' from Her Majesty's Prison Service. Also nearby, on the other side of the road, is where Rose Hart appears in the opening scenes.
spacerThere is space to park a couple of cars next to the bridge. If you go any further along this road there are only one or two other points where it is possible to turn a car and you are thus committed to going up to the top of the Bealach. If you do however there is a car park at the top with some excellent views over the surrounding countryside.
